Has anyone else noticed the rise of the Brown Twitter Bird? What does it mean and where did it come from? Last Tuesday, Slate, an online magazine, posted an article entitled “How black people use Twitter.” In the article, the (non-black) author mused and hypothesized how black people make trending topics popular, how they communicated with peers, how they got retweeted, etc. To make matters worse, the article was illustrated with this graphic, a brown Twitter bird in a fitted cap using a BlackBerry. In response, outraged Twitter users created even more stereotypical and outrageous twitcons and tweets as satire and social commentary, and a Twitter sensation was born. Behold the Brown Twitter Bird. Below are some of my favorites via Inny Vinny.
