A woman was charged extra at a Georgia salon for being overweight. After getting a mani/pedi and eyebrow wax, Michelle Fonville was surprised to see a $5 fee added to her bill. The rather unapologetic manager stated that Fonville’s weight could’ve broken the chair and cost the shop thousands of dollars in repairs. The manager also said it took longer to do Fonville’s nails because she was plus-sized. Though Fonville’s money was refunded, she has been asked not to return to the shop.

This story upsets me for so many reasons. But I’m not going to rant. I’m simply going to say a little piece on how this type of discrimination can be further avoided: Stop patronizing people and places that do not have your best interest! We take for granted the power each and every one of our dollars means. Use them wisely. Support local business. Support black business. When we start to hold corporations socially responsible by withholding fiscally, they will respond. I’m through.
