The Hip-Hop Word Count: A Searchable Rap Almanac

Now that it is widely regarded as a certified institution (and not just a passing phase), hip hop is being taken to new heights. Even Oprah has changed her tune (pun very much intended) about the genre that she so vehemently opposed by adopting Jay-Z. Okay, well not quite, but she has been pushing his Decoded book harder than he used to push rocks. With this being said, it is about time that hip hop has entered academia and started being studied and analyzed. Enter “The Hip-Hop Word Count: A Searchable Rap Almanac.” The project created by Tahir Hemphill is an ethnographic database of the lyrics of over 40,000 rap songs from 1979 to present. According to Hemphill, “The database is the heart of an online analysis tool that generates textual and quantified reports on searched phrases, syntax, memes and socio-political ideas.” Check out this short video about it:

The 90’s Snack: *NSYNC “Oh Holy Night”

I’m not completely a scrooge, but I am just not feeling the holidays this year at all. Can we just not have them and say that we did? It doesn’t work that way? Whatever. In an attempt to conjure some kind of holiday spirit, I have been Youtubing popular holiday hits. I came across this little piece of heaven. I admit, it even made me feel a little bit cheerful. From their 1998 Home for Christmas album, here’s *NSYNC and the acapella version of “Oh Holy Night.”

Have a Merry Christmas and hope to see all my readers and more in the New Year!

Bad Santa

All I’m gonna say is that I would be more than happy to sit in either Black Thought’s or Maxwell’s laps and tell them what I wanted (for Christmas). Ho, ho, ho…

Hanaelujah’s 12 Days of Christmas

I preface this entry by acknowledging that during the holiday season one should be more focused on giving than receiving. However, I AM NOT THE ONE! Additionally, I will not be giving anyone anything for Christmas (besides, of course, unconditional love and hugs and kisses), so now we can get back to the receiving part. Inspired by “The 12 (Ghetto) Days of Christmas,” here’s what I want:

What? Can’t a girl dream? I kid, I kid…kinda…

The 90’s Snack: Quad City DJ’s/69 Boyz “12 Ghetto Days of Christmas”

I can no longer deny the facts that it is definitely December, the holidays are here, it’s ridiculously cold outside, and I’m getting old. Where has the time gone? I guess I should start getting in the holiday spirit or something like that. This song always marked the beginning of the season when it was played on the Gumptown (Montgomery, Alabama for those of you confused) radio when I was growing up. I couldn’t find an actual video, but this ghetto youtube clip is beyond fitting. It’s the “12 Ghetto Days of Christmas” by the 69 Boyz and the Quad City DJ’s.

Bilal at World Cafe Live

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

On Sunday, November 29, I went to see Bilal perform for his hometown audience at the World Cafe Live here in Philly. In one word…AMAZING! In another word…INSPIRED! In a final word…TALENTED! I cannot even begin to put into words the musicgasm I experienced. If you haven’t heard his latest album, Airtight’s Revenge, you should ASAP. Also, listen to his two previous works that I consider soul classics, First Born Second and Love For Sale. Congrats are in order to Bilal for his Grammy nomination for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for “Little One.” Check out “Little One” and my current favorite song “All Matter,” both from Airtight’s Revenge, below.

Arno Bani Captures the King of Pop

These photographs of Michael Jackson by Arno Bani are giving me life! The previously unreleased pics (taken years ago) were originally intended for an upcoming MJ album, but unfortunately we all know how that story ended (“MJ gone…our nigga dead” -Kanye West “All of the Lights”). As part of the “Jaxploitation movement” (full story in development), Bani is now auctioning off the photos in Paris later this month.
